The Melbourne Metro Project comprises a new underground rail route with five new underground stations. The alignment below the CBD commences adjacent to South Yarra Station in the southeast (Eastern Portal) and ends in the vicinity of South Kensington Station on the northwest side of Melbourne.
The new rail route will be integrated with the existing rail networks by tunnel decline structures at both ends of the Metro Tunnel. These structures were rolled out separately from the Metro Tunnel contract and constructed under the Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA).
Tonkin + Taylor was the sub-consultant to BG&E, undertaking all the geotechnical aspects of Proof Engineering. The major work package consisted of tunnel decline structure, upgrades to overhead electrification, and modification to existing bridges affected by the Eastern Portal works.
